Aceh, VIVA – One of the recipients of the SATU Indonesia Awards by Astra in 2021, Rahmad Maulizar brings smiles and new hope to children with cleft lips in Aceh. Together with Smile Train Indonesia and Malahayati Hospital in Banda Aceh, Maulizar promotes the provision of free cleft lip and palate surgery for underprivileged patients. As known, more than 3,200 patients with cleft lips and palates received free surgery services in 2019. According to records from Smile Train Indonesia, an average of 40 patients undergo surgery each month under the hands of Dr. M. Jailani, SpBP-RE (K), a plastic surgeon who partners with Smile Train in Aceh Province. Maulizar himself was a cleft lip patient for 18 years. He first joined as a patient in 2008 and underwent free surgery in 2011. After experiencing a perfect smile and the emergence of a new hope for life, he then wanted to spread the same kindness to those with cleft lips and palates throughout Aceh. The simplest way for him to do this was to travel to villages across Aceh Province, searching for as many cleft lip and palate patients as possible.
