Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian government plans to halt the importation of salt for consumption by 2025 to ensure domestic absorption and prioritizes on boosting local production.
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, stated that the decision aligns with Presidential Regulation No. 126 of 2022 on the Acceleration of National Salt Development.
"According to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, since salt is part of the food sector, it must be self-sufficient. Starting next year, we can no longer import salt for consumption. This is mandated by Perpres 126," the minister said on Friday (Nov 29).

Minister Hasan emphasized that the responsibility for increasing salt production lies primarily with the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono. The sector must achieve self-sufficiency in salt.
He urged the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to strengthen domestic production capacity to meet national consumption needs. Industrial salt production must also meet national demand without relying on imports.
The industrial sector has been asked to transparently report its salt requirements to facilitate accurate planning. Within two years, the government plans to halt industrial salt imports as well.
"Industries should disclose their needs transparently. However, within two years, we will stop industrial salt imports. If next year we stop importing consumption salt, in two years, we will do the same for industrial salt," he stated.
The minister further added that this initiative aligns with Indonesia's commitment to achieving food self-sufficiency by 2027.
