Jakarta, VIVA – Muslims in Indonesia commemorate the Isra Miraj of Prophet Muhammad, a monumental event carrying profound messages for humanity.
The Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, emphasized that one of the key messages of Isra Miraj is the importance of prayer.
“Isra Miraj is a sacred journey that marks a pivotal moment in the Prophet Muhammad’s mission of spreading Islam. The main takeaway from this journey is the obligation of prayer. Therefore, the commemoration of Isra Miraj should serve as a momentum to uphold prayer,” he highlighted on Sunday (Jan 26).

Isra Miraj is one of three significant journeys in the life of the Prophet Muhammad, alongside the Hijrah and the Farewell Pilgrimage.
The Hijrah from Mecca to Medina was a turning point in Islamic history, while the Farewell Pilgrimage marked the success of the Prophet’s mission and the unity of the Muslim community.
On the other hand, Isra Miraj represents the pinnacle of a servant’s spiritual journey toward the Creator, teaching the perfection of the soul and transcendental values.
“The Prophet Muhammad referred to prayer as the miraj of believers. Prayer is the pillar of faith, serving as the foundation for discipline, submission, and a close relationship with Allah SWT,” Minister Umar stated.
He explained that prayer is not merely a ritual act of worship but also a spiritual foundation that fosters harmony with Allah SWT and with fellow human beings.
Prayer begins with a sincere intention and ends with greetings of peace, which carry a profound message of spreading peace and safety.
“Prayer teaches us to maintain balance between our vertical relationship with Allah (hablum minallah) and our horizontal relationship with fellow humans (hablum minannas),” he said.
The Minister also emphasized the significant role of prayer in building communities and nations. When this spiritual foundation is strong, values of justice, peace, and prosperity will flourish, benefitting all levels of society.
“Prayer teaches that individual piety should have a social impact. Well-internalized spiritual values will serve as the basis for fostering unity, tolerance, and social harmony,” he added.
The Minister expressed hope that this year’s Isra Miraj commemoration could be a moment of reflection for Muslims to strengthen their faith, improve their deeds, and build a better future.
“With spirituality as our foundation and prayer as our pillar, let us create a civilization filled with blessings and mercy. May the values taught through Isra Miraj continue to inspire the building of a just, peaceful, and dignified society,” he concluded.
