Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesian Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has revealed several key outcomes from President Prabowo Subianto’s recent working visit to Russia.

Speaking at the Jakarta Geopolitical Forum IX/2025 on Tuesday (June 24),  the minister said that Russia has expressed strong interest in helping Indonesia boost its domestic oil lifting capacity.

“I accompanied President Prabowo to Russia where we discussed energy cooperation. Russia has shown openness and willingness to work with us,” the minister stated in Jakarta.

One of the main areas of collaboration being explored is the optimization of Indonesia’s oil wells.

Currently, only about 16,000 wells are operational out of a total of approximately 39,000 to 40,000 wells across the country.

The minister believes that with Russia’s long-standing expertise in the oil and gas sector, the country can become a strategic partner for Indonesia in ramping up oil production.

“We must acknowledge that Russia is one of the world’s most experienced nations in oil and gas. While we have the wells and some technology, we still need to learn and collaborate,” he explained.

In addition to upstream cooperation, Russia also offered Indonesia the opportunity to import oil and gas.

While this is still in the early stages of discussion, the minister noted that the Indonesian government has welcomed the proposal.

“The talks are still at an exploratory level. I’m scheduled to meet with representatives from Russia’s state-owned enterprises tomorrow. There is real potential here, but it must be mutually beneficial,” he emphasized.

On the topic of nuclear energy, minister Lahadalia confirmed that it was also part of the discussion between President Prabowo and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, he noted that the nuclear partnership is still under conceptual review and no detailed framework has been finalized.

“The nuclear cooperation proposal is being discussed. Russia is not the only country that has made an offer, but theirs is among the most serious so far,” he concluded.
