Jakarta, VIVA – The government continues to maximize Indonesia’s energy potential while ensuring that the nation’s energy needs are consistently met.

To strengthen the energy sector and promote public welfare, Indonesia actively forges partnerships with other countries.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, welcomed the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, at the Ali Wardhana Building in Jakarta last Friday (Jan 31).

Minister Al Mazrouei’s visit aimed to discuss strategic energy cooperation between the two nations. He emphasized that Indonesia is a key strategic partner for the UAE.

With the Indonesia-United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-UAE CEPA) already in place, Minister Al Mazrouei highlighted numerous sectors ripe for collaboration, particularly in energy development.

He also proposed that both countries establish flagship initiatives in the energy sector, such as the development of large-scale power plants with capacities of up to 100GW and the construction of data centers.

"We need a task force to ensure the successful implementation of our energy cooperation," the minister stated.

In response, Minister Hartarto agreed, stressing the need to accelerate the implementation of the I-UAE CEPA.

“We must fast-track our collaboration and begin exploring strategic sectors, including the Andaman Sea Project and the construction of data centers in Batam or Bintan,” Minister Hartarto remarked.

Energy has long been a focal point of cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE.

Earlier, the two nations collaborated on developing the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) in West Java.

This project, a partnership between Indonesia’s state electricity company PLN and Masdar, a UAE-based renewable energy firm, has already generated 145MWp of clean energy.

Furthermore, Minister Al Mazrouei outlined his internal plans to draft a comprehensive proposal for downstream development in the bauxite and gas industries.

He stressed that these commodities are crucial for sectors like aluminum manufacturing and large-scale power generation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both ministers agreed to advance the implementation of the I-UAE CEPA, explore strategic sectors, and foster a favorable business climate for investors in both countries.
