Bogor, VIVA – As environmental degradation continues to threaten biodiversity worldwide, efforts to foster public awareness are evolving beyond traditional campaigns. One emerging approach is visual storytelling—using images and videos not just to document, but to reconnect people with the subtle beauty and vulnerability of nature.
This is the spirit behind the theme “The Picture of Nature’s Secret”, a reminder that much of what needs protecting lies out of plain sight. From elusive forest dwellers to unnoticed ecological patterns, many of nature’s wonders remain hidden from the public eye—yet they are often the most fragile.
"Visual content holds a unique power," said Hans Manansang, Director of Commercial & Business Development at Taman Safari Indonesia. “It engages emotions, crosses language barriers, and brings remote parts of the natural world into people’s everyday lives. In a world saturated with content, we believe there's growing space for visuals that inspire care for the environment.”
To encourage this kind of creative exploration, Taman Safari Indonesia recently launched the 34th International Animal Photo & Video Competition (IAPVC), which invites the public to reflect on and reveal these ‘hidden sides’ of nature.
But organizers emphasize that the event is more than a contest—it’s part of a larger educational push to nurture a culture of conservation through the arts. The competition is also a platform to reach younger generations, especially as short-form visual media becomes central to how people engage with information.
“Conservation is no longer limited to scientists and policymakers,” noted Rizki Handayani, Deputy for Industry and Investment at Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism. “It must involve artists, creators, and citizens. Competitions like these play a crucial role in bridging those worlds.”
