Los Angeles, VIVA – The United Nations on Monday (June 9) urged all parties to exercise restraint as tensions continued to rise in Los Angeles amid public protests against federal immigration raids. When asked about U.S. President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard, UN Spokesperson Farhan Haq called on all sides to avoid further escalation. “We certainly hope that everyone on the ground will work to de-escalate the situation. We do not want to see any further militarization of this issue, and we urge all parties at the local, state, and federal levels to cooperate to that end,” Haq said. When asked whether the UN considered Trump’s deployment of troops to the city as militarization, Haq gave a brief response, “I think you're aware of the situation on the ground, and what we want to see is de-escalation,” he stated. On Saturday, Trump signed a memo authorizing the deployment of at least 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area following confrontations between immigration officers and protesters. The protests began on Friday, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained hundreds of individuals in Los Angeles suspected of living in the U.S. illegally. The Trump administration stated that ICE raids would continue despite the protests, as part of the president's crackdown on immigration. Critics of the raids argue that ICE is targeting law-abiding undocumented migrants—who are essential members of the local community and economy—rather than criminals and the so-called “bad guys” Trump had long promised to deport.
