Sydney, VIVA – Following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent visit to Jakarta after his re-election, the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney hosted a high-level business forum aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and promoting green investment.

The event, titled “Indonesia Updates 2025: Green Investment”, took place at Rydges World Square and gathered key stakeholders including policymakers, investors, and industry leaders from both countries.

The forum highlighted the growing strategic partnership between Indonesia and Australia, particularly in advancing the green economy through sustainable investments in critical mineral sectors.

Indonesian Ambassador to Australia, Dr. Siswo Pramono, opened the event by stressing the challenges of channeling capital into sustainable ventures despite healthy trade relations. “Trade relations are progressing well, but investment in green sectors still lags behind,” he noted.

Nicholas Moore, Australia’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, reiterated Indonesia’s crucial role in the region. He pointed out the symbolic importance of Prime Minister Albanese’s decision to choose Jakarta for his first overseas trip post-re-election, underlining the deepening strategic and economic ties between the two nations.

One of the key presentations was delivered by Muchtazar, Head of Sustainability at Nickel Industries Limited (ASX: NIC), the largest Australian investor in Indonesia’s mining industry. He underscored how the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives have enhanced its ability to secure investment and drive long-term growth.

“At Nickel Industries, ESG goes beyond compliance — it is a cornerstone of our growth strategy,” Muchtazar explained. He noted that transparent ESG practices have been vital in drawing investors and reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

Nickel Industries, which is poised to become one of the world’s top five nickel producers, has earned a Green PROPER rating from Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry since 2022 — a rare achievement among nickel companies in the country. The company has pledged to reduce its carbon intensity by 50% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Key sustainability efforts include the introduction of electric haul trucks, a 200MWp solar power offtake project, and the construction of low-emission High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) processing facilities. Notably, the Hengjaya Mine, operated by Nickel Industries, received the highest sustainability rating among Indonesia’s nickel projects and ranked fourth among all mining operations nationwide in 2023.

The forum concluded with a luncheon hosted by Ambassador Pramono, intended to encourage deeper cooperation in sustainable finance and industrial innovation. As both countries align their goals in the global shift towards clean energy, forums like this underscore a shared vision for a greener and more resilient future — with nickel playing a pivotal role.
