This statement was made following a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Thursday (May 15).

PM Albanese emphasized that Indonesia remains an irreplaceable partner and a vital friend to Australia.

He underlined the importance of deepening economic ties and strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations.

"Our new government was just officially sworn in a day before we began this journey to our neighbor and important friend, Indonesia. I wanted, both symbolically and practically, to show our nations just how much we value our friendship with Indonesia through this visit — once again, just like in 2022, as my first bilateral meeting," he explained.

PM Albanese also expressed admiration for President Prabowo’s leadership in the Southeast Asian region.

He stated that now is the perfect time to push for stronger and mutually beneficial economic cooperation.

"This is my fourth visit here as Prime Minister, and I look forward to our discussions today — not only on our evolving comprehensive strategic partnership but also on efforts to deepen economic engagement with Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region," the prime minister stated.

He continued, "Your leadership in ASEAN is incredibly important, especially as the region now stands as the fastest-growing area in human history."

He went on to emphasize the historical depth and cultural ties that connect Indonesia and Australia, which date back to pre-colonial times.

"Indonesia is an irreplaceable partner for Australia, and our two nations share unbreakable bonds. These ties have existed since Makassan sailors visited Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory — a cultural heritage that predates the arrival of Europeans. I view the people of Indonesia with deep respect," he emphasized.

Moreover, PM Albanese also reaffirmed Australia's readiness to explore concrete steps for enhancing economic cooperation in the future.
