Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono, announced that the Indonesian government fully supports Thailand’s initiative to become a full member of BRICS.
According to the minister, Thailand’s interest in joining BRICS predates Indonesia’s own membership application.
“They’ve requested our support to push for full BRICS membership, and of course, we will make every effort to help Thailand be accepted as a full member,” minister Sugiono said in a statement on Tuesday (May 20).
BRICS—an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—was established in 2006 as a bloc of major emerging economies. South Africa joined the group in 2010.

No new members were added to BRICS until January 1, 2024, when Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates officially joined. Argentina was also invited, but President Javier Milei withdrew the country from BRICS in December 2023.
In early 2025, under Brazil’s presidency of BRICS, Indonesia was officially welcomed as a full member.
With Indonesia’s support, Thailand’s accession to BRICS is expected to proceed smoothly and further enhance economic cooperation in the Southeast Asian region.
