Jakarta, VIVA – China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization's Dispute Settlement Body over the United States' recent tariff hike, the country's Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday (Apr 9).
"China has filed a complaint under the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism over the U.S.' latest tariff increase on Chinese goods," the statement read.
The additional 50 percent tariff imposed by the U.S. severely violates WTO rules and highlights the "unilateral and coercive" nature of the move, the ministry stated.
"China will firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests in accordance with WTO rules and will resolutely uphold the multilateral trading system and the international economic and trade order," the statement continued.

Earlier, on Tuesday (Apr 8), the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the U.S. would begin imposing a 104 percent tariff on Chinese goods starting Wednesday, after Beijing missed a deadline set by President Donald Trump to lift its retaliatory measures.
Last Friday, China’s State Council announced an additional 34 percent tariff on all goods imported from the U.S.
In response, Trump announced on Monday, April 7, 2025, that he would raise tariffs on Chinese imports by 50 percent, effective April 9, unless Beijing withdrew its retaliatory tariffs by Tuesday.
