Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia) has officially launched the socialization of the Indonesian Student Athlete program.

This initiative is designed to create a holistic ecosystem for nurturing young athletes in Indonesia by integrating formal education with athletic achievement from an early age.

The Indonesian Student Athlete program is a collaboration between the Culture & Education Commission, the Athletes’ Commission, and the National Olympic Academy (NOA) Indonesia.

They recognize the importance of building an athlete development pathway without compromising education.

Through this program, NOC Indonesia aims to produce future generations of athletes who excel not only on the field but also in academics and leadership.

"This program is a tangible commitment by the Indonesian Olympic Committee to produce athletes who are accomplished, intelligent, and of high integrity," said NOC Indonesia Chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari.

"We no longer want to see Indonesian children having to choose between education and sports. Both must go hand-in-hand," he added.

Speakers at the event included Chairperson of Commission X of the Indonesian Parliament, Hetifah Sjaifudian, Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Greysia Polii, four-time Olympic medalist in weightlifting Eko Yuli Irawan, and world champion jetski athlete Aero Sutan Aswar.

Hetifah Sjaifudian emphasized that the program encourages the integration of curriculum and education systems by designing flexible and adaptive learning models, including special curricula for student-athletes.

Academic support from schools and universities will also be crucial, along with scholarship schemes for those who achieve both academically and athletically.

"We must create space for Indonesian children to develop holistically — their minds, bodies, and characters. Therefore, future education policies must be increasingly adaptive to the needs of student-athletes, such as more flexible educational ecosystems. As the saying goes, 'medals on the chest, knowledge in the head," Sjaifudian remarked.

Meanwhile, Eko Yuli Irawan also shared his experiences regarding the challenges of balancing training and school.

He admitted that he once struggled to continue his education because the national training camps kept relocating, leading him to complete his high school education through an alternative program.

"As an athlete, you must be disciplined in managing your time between school and training. Both must be balanced so you can complete your education and achieve sporting success," Irawan emphasized.
